hot socks
I finished my first pair of socks today. I am wearing them right now and they are really satisfying on the feet. I have typed out the pattern incase I forget to get a copy before I leave.

Socks size 10-12 (set of 4 No. 11 (3mm) knitting needles with points at both ends)

� cast 48 stitches onto one needle
� K1, P1 for 16 stitches onto three needles (dividing the 48 stitches onto the three needles
� join in round and K1, P1 for three and a half inches (keep the knots down to make sure you stitch into the right side)
� plain knit until work form beginning measures eight inches (or desired length)

For Heel

� slip 3 stitches from the end of the first needle onto beginning of second & 3 stitches from beginning of third needle onto end of second needle
� divide the 22 stitches on second needle onto 2 needles (11 stitches & 11 stitches)
� knit the stitches of first needle onto end of third needle
� working on 26 stitches of third needle, K1, P11, P2tog, P11, K1 = 25 stitches�turn around to knit back
� next row (1) = K1, Slip 1�to last stitch�finish with knit
� next row (2) = K1, P to last stitch, K1
� repeat these two rows for two inches ending with first row

To Shape Heel

first row�P12, P2tog (insert needle as if purling through two stitches at once), P1, TURN
second row�K3, Sl 1, K1, pass slipped stitch over knit stitch and let drop below needle, K1, TURN
third row�P4, P2tog, P1, TURN
fourth row�K5, Sl 1, K1, pass over, K1, TURN
fifth row�P6, P2tog, P1, TURN
sixth row�K7, Sl 1, K1, psso, K1, TURN
seventh row�P8, P2tog, P1, TURN
eighth row�K9, Sl 1, K1, psso, , K1, TURN
� 11 stitches on needle
ninth row�P10, P2tog, P1, TURN
tenth row�K11, Sl 1, K1, psso, K1, TURN
eleventh row�P12, P2tog, P1, TURN
twelfth row�K12, Sl 1, K1, psso, TURN
� 13 stitches on needle

To Make Instep

� put the 22 stitches for instep onto one needle
first needle�with right side of work facing and using the needle with 13 heel stitches pick up and knit 11 stitches along side of heel. � insert needle into 11 of the loops formed at the sides of the heel stitches and knit them onto the heel needle
second needle�knit across 22 stitches for instep
third needle�pick up and knit 11 stitches along other side of heel, then knit 6 stitches from beginning of first needle onto the end of the third
� stitches are now divided as follows:�first needle: 18 stitches
�second needle: 22 stitches
�third needle: 17 stitches
Proceed�
first round�knit
second round�first needle: Knit to last three stitches. K2tog. K1
�second needle: Knit
�third needle: K1. Sl 1. K1. psso. Knit to end of needle
� repeat these two rounds to 11 stitches on first needle, 22 stitches on second needle, 10 stitches on third needle. 43 stitches in round.
� continue in plain knitting until work, from where stitches were picked up for instep measures 6 inches or desired length
� knit one round, decreasing 1 stitch (K2tog) in middle of row on second needle

To Shape Toe

� first round�
first needle�knit to last 3 stitches. K2tog. K1
second needle�K1. Sl 1. K1. psso. Knit to last three stitches. K2tog. K1
third needle�K1. Sl 1. K1. psso. Knit to end of needle
� second round�
knit across each needle
� repeat these 2 rounds to 18 stitches in round
� knit the stitches of first needle onto end of third needle
� break yarn leaving an end eight inches long

To Graft Toe

� thread a darn needle with the yarn left at toe
� inserting needle as for knitting into first stitch on front knitting needle, draw yarn through the stitch and slip the stitch off the knitting needle
� inserting needle as for purling into second stitch on front knitting needle, draw yarn through and let stitch remain on knitting needle
� taking yarn under front knitting needle, insert needle as for purling into first stitch on back knitting needle. Draw yarn through this stitch and slip the stitch off the knitting needle.
� inserting needle as for knitting into second stitch of back knitting needle, draw yarn through and let stitch remain on knitting needle
� bring yarn forward under the knitting needles and repeat from * until all stitches are worked off
� darn in end (make a knot through the remaining loop and pull end through to inside of sock; turn inside ot and lace darning needle diagonally through stitches--pull through and cut)
� press lightly

*to switch colours/change balls knit to end and insert needle as for knitting/purling--draw yarn over needle as you wood except also draw new yarn over as well. Continue knitting with new wool and darn the ends through diagonally when you finish

I have wound up the two balls of PEI mohair wool I got at the Farmer's Market in Charlottetown, so they are ready for the pair I am making with them. Before I start those, however, I have decided to do a pair in the style of the Acadian flag for the Green Door to sell. I may just give them to Sam. I am a much more confidant knitter, but lack the finess to freestyle on my needles. I will learn to improve as I go.
